Upholstered Leather Benches And Leather Cleaning Tips

When you’re looking to buy a new leather couch, they are a lot of factors to consider: cost, comfort, style and durability. True, you can try to save money on wooden benches upholstered with leather but that might not be too comfortable for long durations of sitting. If you want to enjoy a leather couch for years to come, you need to find one that is comfortable and easy to maintain while also staying in budget.

Frankly, while money buys you a nice supple leather sofa, it is not the most practical for everyday living. This is because for a leather sofa to feel buttery soft, it means it did not go through a lot of applications of protective coating. While this coating deflects spills and stains, it does leave the leather feeling a bit hard. On the other hand, protected leather is much easier to clean. In fact, cleaning pretty much amounts to wiping with a damp cloth and then applying a good leather conditioner so the couch doesn’t dry.

On the other hand, if you buy an expensive soft couch that is made out of what is known as aniline leather, or unfinished/unprotected leather, it is much harder to clean. Basically, this type of leather is left looking as natural as possible and has probably only been treated with aniline dye and hence the name aniline leather. The color is soaked into the animal hide and it is pretty much left alone after that so the leather breathes. This is why this type of leather is so susceptible to spills. Everything soaks into it. Therefore, while an aniline leather couch is wonderfully soft to feel, it might not be the best couch for a busy household. If stains or spills were ever to mark an unprotected couch, you will need the best leather cleaner and conditioner that the professionals use and even that might not soft the problem. To get rid of a leather sofa stain, you might have to redye the leather so that it matches the stain after it has been cleaned.

As you can see, it is probably better to save your money than buying an expensive leather couch that isn’t very practical nor washable. Of course, there’s no need to go to the extreme that would amount to sitting on wooden park benches in order to save money.  No,  a sensible protected leather couch that is comfortable and easy to clean is a sensible compromise.
